Stories from Men at Our New Journey
From Struggle to Strength: Real Men, Real Recovery

On my path through life in recovery I’ve seen it all. Some sober house owners look at their properties as an easy source of income; they cut corners and turn a blind eye to situations that can endanger the safety or sobriety of an entire house of people.
At Our New Journey, I don’t have to worry about anything like that. Leo only rents to men that value their sobriety and show the drive to better themselves. The house may have more structure than most, but everything asked of us are things that would be done by anyone on an honest road of recovery.

When I was released from rehab, I was looking for a sober house on Long Island and my case worker said this house would be my best choice for my recovery because of the way it is structured and managed and after being here for over 30 days I have to agree with my case worker.
Leo, who runs the houses, is well respected. He runs a great program and I like that the house is well managed and kept clean and all the men are serious about their sobriety.

“I am a Miracle. Beyond my wildest dreams. One day at a time.” These are the quotes so often heard at AA. I have 14 months of sobriety. The quote I can most associate with my time at Our New Journey is, “if you ain’t doing what I’m doing I have no use for you.” Perhaps not eloquently phrased, but it encompasses my recovery at Our New Journey.
All of us together are focused on our sobriety. We all pull for each other, which makes this a special place. If not for Our New Journey, I would never have made it this far or developed the tools to go further. I am a miracle. I could never have done it alone.

Safety—knowing I am protected and that all my property is safe and locked up with a key. There is no fighting, cursing, or street behavior. I’m given the opportunity to grow and redeem myself when I make a mistake. The house stays clean and is never dirty. I’m taught responsibility by having a chore to do, which keeps me humble. Learning accountability by following rules that are specified so I learn how to be mature and aware of my schedule.
